His First Show

DSC00002

Last summer my son showed his first steer. It was a great learning experience and I was so glad that he got the chance.  He is grown a lot this year and I think he will show so much better this summer with his new steer.  So much hard work and it hard to sell the steer after fair.

      1. I see some show steers and heifers going for outrageous amounts. I’m told people purchase as a form of advertising? I’m also told that a lot of the time the kid doesn’t get all that money, is that usually the case? How does it get split up?

  1. In our area we are having a large oil boom right now, so a lot of those companies are bidding and buying the kids animals. They are selling for awesome prices for the kids. My daughter sold her steer for over $5.00 per lb. That is almost unheard of. The kids must give 10% to the 4-H. The 4-H splits it up to 2% going to help with the market sale and 8% going to the 4-H scholarship. Our kids pay have to pay the ranch for the steer, which last year was 750.00 and they reimburse us for feed. In the end they still come out with a pretty good savings for college.
